Welcome to the best time of the year! Its summer, and that means quality family time spent at the pool, the beach, outside in the yard, or a good relaxing day indoors. With summer comes a few safety issues that may not be as prevalent throughout the rest of the year. We want to help you and your children have a happy, healthy, and safe season, so here is the first part of our series on helpful tips to having a great summer!
Dr. Amster, M.D., FAAP, and Dr. Kemerer, M.D., FAAP, are excited to announce that Warrenton Pediatrics opened a second location, Linton Hall Pediatrics in Gainesville, Virginia on May 9th, 2019. Linton Hall will have all the same familiar faces that our patients have come to know, along with the additions of two new Nurse Practitioners.
To get ready for the upcoming sports seasons, there is a lot to do: prepping equipment, getting the snack schedule down pat, and getting into the routine of practices, just to name a few. However, the most important thing you can do to make sure your athlete is prepared for the new season, getting a sports physical completed by your Pediatrician.
Recently Warrenton Pediatrics has expanded into our second location, Linton Hall Pediatrics! This means you might be seeing some new faces around our offices and online. Ashley Jeniec and Sooky Emmanuel-Frank are our new Nurse Practitioners. You can read all about them on our About Us page; they are excited to bring their pediatrics experience to you and your family.
Over the last few weeks, we’ve been seeing a significant increase in tick bites, partly from awareness in our population as to their significance, and partly because they are just worse this year. Most live in nests generally found in the woods, but they can also be found in soft ground, decomposing wood and leaves, or man made items such as old mattresses.
With summer upon us, we are spending a lot more time with our families and especially our children. It’s a great joy, and something I look forward to for months. However, close contact can often cause friction as children act as children do, pushing boundaries and making ill-advised decisions. Understanding proper discipline technique and how to use it can make this time much more meaningful and actually lower tensions in the house.
Most parents are careful about using sunscreen to protect their children’s skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. Because these rays can also cause damage to the eyes (such as an increased risk of cataracts and macular degeneration later in life), it is also important to protect them. Kids tend to spend more time outdoors than adults, which increases their exposure to UV radiation. Their eyes are also more susceptible to the harmful effects of this radiation because the lens inside a child’s eye is clear and, therefore, less able to filter the rays. Exposure to harmful UV rays is also increased when at high altitudes, in tropical places, and in highly reflective locations like on the water or a sandy beach. Proper sunglasses are especially important in these situations.
This year, I am one of many parents with very mixed emotions about the start of the school year because my youngest will be starting kindergarten (sigh…). He’s so excited about going to school that it’s impossible for his enthusiasm not to be contagious. But at the same time, there are those “my baby is all grown up” moments that can just about break my heart. If you are also in this position (or will be someday), there are some things to keep in mind that can help ease the transition for both you and your child.
When I first went off to kindergarten, I remember the excitement in seeing new and old friends from the neighborhood, meeting my teacher and getting to do new activities. Aside from the bottle of Champagne on the counter, I don’t remember anything my parents did to prepare me for that day. Only after watching my own daughters head off to preschool for the first time did I realize everything we had done to prepare them for being on their own.
Playing sports helps keep you fit and active, they are also a great way to meet new people and keep up on your socialization skills. One thing that many people don’t know is why it is so important to get a sport physical prior to the beginning of your sports season.
